Phonics ‘goublf’ Boom Card Bundle: Initial sound recognition

This Boom Card Bundle contains 6 separate decks to support teaching oral labelling and naming pictures alongside the assessment and recognition of initial sounds g, o, u, b, l and f. Each deck consists of 20 cards with a choice of 4 images on each. Your child must label/name each image and decide which one has the requested initial sound (different deck for s, a, t, p, i and n). There is an audio clip on each card in the deck that gives the instruction of what to do (ie. name the images and tap the sound… (sound is given).

Using the Boom Learning site you can create a classroom and add your students. Children are given their username and pin to log in .You can then assign the games to children in your class and track their progress on the site once they log in and play the games. You can also alter how many cards you wish them to play so you can set it to play just 5 or 10 cards out of the 20 each time they play if you wish or given them all 20 each time. You can change this setting when you are in your library: beside each of your decks you will see an ‘action’ button. Click the action button and a drop down list will appear: action > custom play settings > default > type in the number you wish them to play.

They are also perfect for remote learning tasks as you can send the children their hyperplay link to sign in and play assigned games or alternatively you can send them a fast pin which allows them to play and practise the skills without even needing to sign in. Fast play pins, however, do not track progress.

How I use these cards both in class and for remote teaching/learning: 

Main usages: Recognition of initial sounds. Labelling and naming images.

Other ways in which I use these cards in small group or 1 to 1 sessions:

TIP: When doing these I tend to use fast pins as I dont want thier answers tracked as the correct answers relate only to the recognition of initial sounds.

-What are the initial sounds of the other images?

-What are the middle/end sounds of each of the words/images?

-Modelling questions and requests: Where is…?  Point to… Show me… Can you find…?

-Modelling and using carrier phrases when answering questions: It’s a … I can see a… There is a…

-Modelling using labels and names in sentences.

-Rhyming: can you think of any rhyming words for each image?

-Creating your own stories using the 4 images from each card.

-Give the function, feature or class of the item,c an the child identify it?

-Point to an image and ask for the function/feature/class.
